Petals of Identity
“Provincial flowers” serve as symbolic representations of each region’s unique identity. However, they are often perceived as mere “shelf-bound emblems,” overlooked and underutilised despite their rich potential to tell stories and connect with local culture in diverse ways.
The “Petals of Identity” project aims to creatively and contemporarily reinterpret provincial flowers, bringing them into people's everyday lives across all generations. This initiative breathes new life into these symbols, taking them off the shelf and into the hearts and hands of the people.
The project begins with four pilot provinces: Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen, Pattani, and Ratchaburi, using various creative media to explore their floral identities:
1.Illustrated Children’s Stories
Collaborating with four emerging illustrators (Take Time to Make Kram, Chicken Mew, Nahm.Tattooer, and Sukri Chepooteh), each with a distinctive style, the project presents engaging tales inspired by the provincial flowers. These stories reflect local identities and lifestyles, weaving vivid imaginations through endearing child characters that captivate readers of all ages.
2.Textile Pattern Design
Designed by Kawalin Pimsorn, the creator of Did You See Any Pattern? who has crafted over 100 floral designs; these textiles transform each province’s flower into contemporary patterns. Beautifully detailed and timeless, the fabrics are versatile for everyday use and appeal to all ages and occasions.
3.Live Printing Installation
Led by Dr. Wijit Apichatkriengkrai, an artist known for public art and eco-aesthetic concepts, this activity brings provincial flowers into the community spotlight. Through an interactive art-making process, participants collaboratively create expanding fabric prints, each print building upon the last. This evolving artwork fosters social connection and celebrates shared creativity, creating an inspiring communal atmosphere.
4.Interactive and Immersive Art Installation
Developed by 27 June Studio, this cutting-edge New Media Art installation allows visitors to interact with and become part of the artwork. Each experience is tailored to the flower of a specific province, blending technology and art to immerse participants in unique floral narratives.
5.Creative Communications
Sonjai House leads the project’s communication strategy, crafting a fresh and contemporary image for provincial flowers. Through friendly and accessible storytelling, they highlight the vibrant identities of the flowers from all four provinces, via Facebook Page: Petals of Identity (https://www.facebook.com/petalsofidentity)
