MEGA MAT: Reimagining Waste into Wonder

Plastic waste has increasingly become a disconcerting issue across the world today, especially in Thailand. It is estimated that approximately 2 million tonnes of plastic waste are generated in Thailand each year, and only about 21% of it is recycled. The rest either goes to landfill or is simply uncollected. Fortunately, more and more industries are turning toward circular materials and the recycling of plastic waste. On a national level, policies and frameworks have been introduced to reduce the consumption of plastic and improve the management of waste. The future is looking positive. MVRDV Architects, in collaboration with the Creative Economic Agency, PTT Global Chemicals, and the Embassy of the Netherlands, have created a gigantic recycled plastic mat for Bangkok Design Week 2025 in support and promotion of circularity and recycled plastic products. The Mega Mat celebrates the versatility of recycled plastic by transforming it into a local household product, the ‘Sua’ or mat, on which Thai families have been sitting for generations. The mat is lifted on one corner to share information, while the remainder of the 860 sqm mat is free for people to sit on and enjoy the Laan Kon Muang plaza as their living room. The shape, pattern, and colors of the mat are inspired by the roof of Wat Suthat Thepwararam, a temple located behind the plaza, connecting it to its surrounding context. The colors are arranged as a gradient offset towards a green epicenter, symbolizing the Green Target, representing our goal for a sustainable future. Each mat is also woven with a traditional Thai textile pattern to reflect local art and culture. At the end of Bangkok Design Week, the modular mats will be dismantled and given a third life. Some of the mats will be upcycled into bags and other similar products, while others will be given away as souvenirs or donated to temples. With this installation, MVRDV Architects and our partners hope to raise awareness, explore the creative possibilities of recycled plastic, and encourage circular materials and upcycling. Through creative design, we hope to create a positive change in our cities and our environment. Let’s recycle!
