Making Place Exhibition

“Making Place” is the exhibition showcasing the work of Italian architect Francesco Rossini, presenting ideas for transforming neglected spaces into community teaching areas that foster unity and promote equality in society. “Making Place” is a research initiative aimed at reconnecting people with dysfunctional public open spaces through temporary architectural interventions. In addition to exploring alternative solutions that could positively impact the community, the project seeks to challenge the rules, limits, and guidelines imposed by top-down government approaches to managing public spaces. One of the innovative aspects of this research is its site-specific focus, which goes beyond the generic strategies associated with traditional placemaking. While the methods used in these pilot projects are replicable, the designs are tailored to the unique characteristics of each site, ensuring that interventions are contextually relevant and impactful. The concept of making “Making Place” is rooted in the idea of place as dynamic. As geographer Tim Creswell, (2006) argues, place is not a static label of identity but rather a framework for fostering creative social practices. Transforming space through collective actions and incremental, small-scale adaptations can have a significant impact on the places. Bio Francesco Rossini is an Italian architect and urban designer who has been a faculty member at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) School of Architecture since 2013. He became an Associate Professor with tenure in 2022 and has recently been awarded national scientific accreditation by Italy's Ministry of University and Research (MIUR). Francesco is recognized for his expertise in reimagining public spaces, with a focus on transforming dysfunctional and underutilized areas into vibrant and inclusive environments in both formal and informal urban settings. He holds a master's degree in architecture with honors from the University of Naples Federico II and a Ph.D. in Urbanism (cum laude) from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (BarcelonaTech UPC). During his doctoral studies, Francesco was awarded a competitive research grant from Spain's Ministry of Education. Prior to joining CUHK, he contributed to prominent research initiatives in collaboration with globally renowned institutions such as Politecnico di Milano, Barcelona Tech UPC, and Tongji University. In 2020, he was appointed Adjunct Assistant Professor in Urban Planning at Columbia University's GSAPP. With over 20 years of professional experience, Francesco has worked with leading architectural and urban design firms across Italy, Spain, and China, contributing to high-profile projects that bridge academic research and practical application. Since 2017, he has been an active member of the Placemaking Europe network, a member of the Hong Kong Institute of Urban Design (HKIUD) since 2018, and currently serves as the regional leader for Placemaking X in Hong Kong, a global initiative promoting innovative approaches to public space design. **Related article:** [https://www.artribune.com/progettazione/architettura/2024/02/rigenerazione-urbana-hong-kong-intervista-francesco-rossini/](https://www.artribune.com/progettazione/architettura/2024/02/rigenerazione-urbana-hong-kong-intervista-francesco-rossini/)
