Bangkok Bicycle Signage

As a Bangkokian, I have been using bicycle to commute in this city for more than 10 years. Comparing to other more bike-friendly cities I visited and lived while studying abroad, the cycling infrastructure of Bangkok has so much to be desired. I have always hoped that Bangkok will be a safe place for cyclists. One of the main policies of Bangkok Governor, Chadchart Sittipunt is "better travel", which I have been involved as a volunteer, working with hundreds of cyclists, other volunteers and many BMA units since 2022. By focusing on "first mile and last mile" in the areas where lots of people commute by bike on a daily basis, improving the physical condition of the road, creating smoother connection to rail and boat systems. A lot has been done and there are so much more development planned through the end of the governor's term. As a designer and founder of conscious, a studio that works on way-finding and environmental graphics, I see that apart from improving physical condition of the city is not enough. Having a proper signage system for bicycle commute should be done in parallel. Bangkok Design Week is a great opportunity to present such system and get feedback from the audience. We can also suggest a route for cyclists to hop around and enjoy the festival faster than walking (as I and my friends did in previous years.) Since Bangkok's road condition comes in a very wide variety, the way to design routes and signage system should be tailor-made for each location. We can make a small exhibition that propose all the possible options and gather feedback for further development.
