The Heritage Habitat Group: Where Creativity and Tradition Intersect
In the heart of Bangkok's historic district, a collective known as the “Heritage Habitats” Group has emerged, born from the fusion of 3 Design Studio , Studio / Us, CODE Studio, and The Roots Routes. These studios have seamlessly transformed the second of those old shophouses into new living spaces, tucked away in the charming alleys of the city's ancient core. Their story intertwines with the essence of Bangkok Design Week 2024, painting a vibrant picture under the theme "Livable Scape: Where Every Action Enhances the City."
Our group aims to share their experiences of living in the old city and their work related to architectural conservation, cultural heritage, and senses of community and neighborhood. We would like to invite visitors to explore our new workspaces, which serve as showcases for utilizing vacant spaces in the old city. Additionally, we would like to encourage participants to join guided tours through three connected districts: The woodcraft district, Dinsor neighborhood, Ti Thong area. Participants can immerse themselves in the unique atmosphere of each area, moving from one studio to another. Upon completing the tour of all three studios, attendees receive souvenirs.
Objective of the exhibition
1. Building a Network: Create a network of individuals interested in repurposing and reutilizing vacant spaces in the old city.
2. Changing Perspectives: Offer participants a new perspective on the old city, emphasizing not just its tourist attractions but also how living in a cultural heritage area enhances quality of life.
3. Inspiring Innovation: Encourage participants to innovate and adapt new perspectives to their own living spaces, considering the benefits of traditional homes and neighborhoods.
Exhibition
Code Studio is an architectural office located on the second floor of the Samfah Kanchang shop, which is a shop specializing in wooden doors and windows in the wood trading district behind Wat Sae ket temple. The second floor of the original row building used to be a small-scale factory that processed and manufactured wooden doors, windows, and small pieces of furniture. However, due to changes in new regulations that prohibited industrial operations, the interior space of the row building was left abandoned for a long time. With a keen interest in conservation and repurposing of old buildings, our studio has taken the initiative to utilize and renovate this space for another purpose. Through the lengthy renovation process and the experiences gained from the actual work, we have discovered many interesting aspects, both in terms of the renovation process itself and in the utilization of the space. We have also had the opportunity to reintegrate ourselves into the old town community. We would like to share this experience with those who are interested in visiting, in the hopes that the valuable insights gained can be applied to their own spaces.
Inside the workspace that we have opened for public viewing, visitors will have the chance to see the completed renovation works carried out by our architects. These works still bear traces of the past activities that once took place here, as well as the methods used during the renovation.
Together, let's explore the answers to the following questions:
• Why did this area become a wood trade district?
• What is the relationship between Wat Sae ket and Bangpho district?
• What interesting perspectives and insights arise from the renovation and utilization of old row buildings in the wood trade district?
• How will this wood trade district transform in the future after the introduction of the mass transit system?
