49 & FRIENDS: Seven Beliefs and Reality

Color beliefs have existed since time immemorial. One example is an ancient belief dating back to when humans could only discern three colors of the rainbow: red, green and purple. The belief held that rainbows represented the Holy Trinity. Later, there was debate as to whether rainbows have four colors, which were interpreted as the four elements of earth, water, wind and fire as posited by Greek philosopher Empedocles. Eventually, the rainbow was seen to have seven colors, then seen as purple, blue, green, yellow, pink, red and white, which were associated with seven angels. These colors have since been explained with scientific theories. The exhibition, “Seven Beliefs and Reality” uses all seven colors of the rainbow to stimulate awareness of issues related to their use in architecture and design through light, sound, and shared experiences. Visitors are invited to consider the truthfulness of their beliefs and compare them to other people’s beliefs, as we move forward in a world where diversity in the norm and we must find ways to live together in this city.
