SENSE OF NANG LOENG

TROK KHUN LOENG

The history of the Nang Loeng community relates to the growth of Bangkok, this area was a cultural center of dance, music, food, source of employment, as well as a food court for civil servants in various units surrounding the community. However, when government agencies are moved away, the Nang Loeng community was therefore affected. It's not just people who lack income, but the culture that was passed on in the community is also disappearing. How can designers play a part in redeveloping this disappearing space to bring it back to life? The changes in urban context today, including moving the government center, city expansion, the problem of contagious disease Covid-19, it greatly affects the Nang Loeng community. From earlier days, the Nang Loeng community was formed by moving the old palace to Suan Dusit, resulting in community employment, bakery, food supply to the palace, as well as being a source of art and music. In later periods, the Nang Loeng community was a place for people who dreamed of becoming an actor, home musicians, music teachers, artists, and an affordable food center for civil servants around the area. Nowadays, when the government center is moved away, and the problem of Covid-19 causes the food delivery to replace the necessity of the market. The community becomes lonely, deserted, unsafe area. So the question arises, how can the designers use the design to improve the space? So this is the chance to recreate the existing areas in Nang Loeng, designing temporary public activity area to promote livelihoods of people in the community. The spaces are designed using simple language from what can be found in Nang Loeng market, whether it's plastic crates, candy cans, or the colors of fabric work, following different characters of each area. When the activity ends, these items can still be given back to people in the community to use for further benefits. The exhibition runs from February 4 to 12, and can be viewed from 7:00 AM to 09:30 PM. The show has no admission fee. can walk around freely
