Weaving Cityscapes and Sound

Weaving Cityscapes in Sound Using an exploratory design approach to investigate Bangkok’s urban cityscape with the intent to weave together a multiplicity of sights and sounds so as to begin to codify a unique cultural environment, this project extracted audio and visual topographies found within the city through data sonification and graphic documentation as a way to understand the daily behaviors, patterns and constructed environments that are often overlooked, but play a vital role in the identity of a community. The collected images were translated into 8-bit pixel-based graphics, similar to silk tapestry patterns, and displayed on custom designed micro-light boards using a computational process. The audio was filtered, synthesized and digitally reconstructed. Together, the resulting outcome is an interpretation of Bangkok through a series of dynamically changing graphic patterns committed in light, sound and fabric. The project is both a playful decoding of everyday life, and a form of cultural preservation by transcribing the pedestrian moments of the city that may slowly disappear. This project is a collaboration between Mixed Methods (Pornprapha Phatanateacha), xLab (Levi Hammett), Sonic Jeel (Michael Hersrud), and current MFA student at VCUarts Qatar Naima Almajdobah. Within the context of Bangkok Design Week 2023's theme, this project critically examines the notion of culture by developing hybrid artifacts that explore contemporary urban patterns through the lens of traditional crafts. Sound and low-resolution graphical patterns in the style of traditional Thai silk weaving were used to document specific motifs that constitute the contemporary urban culture of Bangkok. Where the quest to preserve endangered cultural practices often places the view on tradition, sometimes missing the rich landscape of contemporary cultural patterns that intertwine with tradition to construct a holistic cultural identity, the approach used in this project for cultural preservation and analysis remains cognizant of the present.
