Urban Risk Lab was established at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2012 as an interdisciplinary organization of researchers working to solve complex urban issues and build resilient communities across the globe.
With climate change exacerbating the impacts of hazards, the role of designers has never been more central in directing the course of urban development as humanity's ability to survive and bounce back from a disaster is heavily influenced by its designed environments — infrastructure, buildings, cities, landscapes, and digital worlds.
As a university-based research lab, Urban Risk Lab's focus is on action research - pursuing rigorous academic inquiry through projects, as well as striving to effect real change in the world by partnering with governments, NGOs, universities, and communities.
With a global network of partners, the Lab is a place to innovate techniques, processes, and systems to address the complexities of seismic, climatic, and hydrologic risks.
This presentation discusses the Urban Risk Lab’s work in addressing disaster resilience and climate change adaptation through design across different scales and dimensions.
In addition to international projects, the talk will also focus on Bangkok and Thailand. The talk will be led by Prof. Miho Mazereeuw, an Associate Professor of Architecture and Urbanism in the Department of Architecture at MIT and the Director of the Urban Risk Lab, Mayank Ojha, a Researcher and Senior Software Designer, and by Eakapob Huangthanapan, a Research Associate and Country Lead for Thailand.
